In our country today, almost half of all adults (43%) have poor literacy skills. In fact, 20% of Americans cannot read well enough to fill out a simple job application. There is a good chance you know adults who can barely read the menu at a restaurant or who have difficulty writing a check. And these same adults may unintentionally put a child, or themselves, at risk because they cannot read a medicine label.

Learn to Read of Northwest Florida, Inc. is an adult literacy program working to change these unnecessary statistics. We provide free, one-on-one instruction to adults in basic reading and writing, English for speakers of other languages, and GED preparation. We want to teach every adult in Escambia County and Santa Rosa County how to read, and we can. . . with your help.

In 2009, our volunteer tutors provided more than 4,300 hours of instruction to our students. Throughout the year, we encourage community outreach through special events and fundraisers and continually strive to inform adults about the resources of Learn to Read of Northwest Florida that are available to help them improve their literacy skills. Get involved. You can make a difference. Turn a Page. Change a Life.
